Ballroom Dancing is of the Devil!!!
Just for fun, after my young adult Bible study ended tonight, I forced everyone over my house to watch an episode of "Jack Van Impe Presents." Jack Van Impe is one of the older and still more famous self-proclaimed prophecy experts on the airwaves (who of course has been consistently wrong about every major prophetic prediction and warning, yet still is on the air and maintains many enthusiastic followers). Today wasn't so much about prophecy but about "apostate churches" and "worldly churches." Apparently one of the horrible sins infecting churches these days is the acceptance of ballroom dancing as a legitimate form of entertainment. In fact, some churches even offer ballroom dancing inside their doors!!!
Van Impe was clearly disgusted by this and repeated his displeasure several times. Ballroom dancing was mentioned along with substance addiction as one of the problems facing the culture today. Now, I certainly agree that there's all sorts of bad doctrines floating around various churches and denominations today. And I also agree that many Christians have let unwholesome habits or entertainment into their lives. But come on, ballroom dancing? What is wrong with fundamentalists and the extreme holiness types? Where do the derive their definition of "worldly"? Does "worldly" equal anything remotely "fun" not connected to private spiritual disciplines and fundamentalist worship services?
No music. No playing cards--even if its just for sport and not for money. After all, it has the appearance of worldliness! Today it's playing Uno with your buddies. Tomorrow it's standing around a poker table in a drunken stupor gambling away all your family's money. No movies. Unless they are Left Behind movies or "The Passion of the Christ." Absolutely no drinking, not even one drop! (Pot-luck galores and constant obesity is OK though, of course). No music not found on Christian radio stations. Well, actually, most fundamentalists hate contemporary Christian music thinking it also to be "worldly." All good Bible-believing Christians should only sing and listen to songs from the 18th and 19th centuries (acceptable worship music ceased being written after 1955). No name brand clothes, even if they are modest, because only "worldly" people wear those. No nice homes or cars either (unless you are a prosperity charismatic, though they'd happily accept most the rest of the above). Basically, if it feels good DON'T do it. Anything that brings human pleasure is wrong and bad.
This is the essence of true holiness apparently.
"Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of the world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules. 'Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!' These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence." --Col. 2:20-23
Legalism and fundamentalism does not create Biblical holiness, only a false and extra-Biblical illusion.

Bill,
You forgot to mention that most of them head south to Florida for the winter to stay in their second home or condo. Retirement is nowhere found in the Bible yet these same folk are on a perpetual vacation, hording their retirement accounts (bigger barns?) while those around them go hungry and without and their churches needing workers. I just finished helping one of these Ozzie & Harriet Christians(?) and the whole time heard nothing but disgust about the music in most churches. Oh, by the way, they're waiting for and chomping at the bit for the John Hagee wars to start too!

"Ballroom dancing was mentioned along with substance addiction as one of the problems facing the culture today."
This is demented and assinine beyond words. It's as if Van Impe deliberately seeks to justify the old atheist stereotype of Christians as mind-hating, culture-destroying sadomasochists.
Yet there's a method to the cultic madness: isolate your followers from contact with the real world and they'll be easier to dupe and swindle.
Hi Bill - as one of your brothers in the denom I had to weigh in on this one. Alow me to offer a slightly different perspective. When we react to the Van Impes of the world we need to be careful. For starters we might end up focusing time and energy on stuff that just isn't that important in the long run (we can make a profession of critiquing the church - there is so much material!) In my mind this falls under the "you can't build something new and healthy through deconstruction" principle.
Secondly, be assured that someday a younger generation will look at you and me and roll their eyes over our own sacred cows (I turned 40 this year and have a 7th grade daughter, so I am living this reality). Don't kid yourself, we will have them too. One day we will be driving south for the winter and longing for the glory days - so let's be charitable to our boomers and builders in the hope that our kids will do the same for us.
Last, let us always remember the Biblical admonition to restore our erring brothers with gentleness while we watch out that we are not tempted (Gal. 6:1).
You have a prophetic gifting that God wants to use in amazing ways (along with a keen intellect and great communication gifts)- my encouragement is to use them in building up the Body of Christ toward unity and the fulfillment of the mission of Christ. Continue to call a spade a spade, but don't stop there.

Hey, I recently added a news widget from http://www.widgetmate.com/ to my blog. It Shows the latest news, and just took a copy and paste to implement. You May have interest you too

I'm just over 40 myself, and equally puzzled by the slang and humor of the youngsters. I also agree in principle with your advice on keeping a Biblical perspective and spirit of Christian humility when noting faults in the church.
That being said, Van Impe's dread of ballroom dancing is so out of line with modern cultural trends that he might as well inveigh against the Charleston. It's flat out bizarre, like Jack Chick's attempts to depict present day youth culture in his comic book tracts. The problem Bill's getting at isn't nostalgia or geezer awkwardness, but an insular religious mindset that cannot discern the world in its true proportions and developments.
And, Bill:
"Just for fun, after my young adult Bible study ended tonight, I forced everyone over my house to watch an episode of "Jack Van Impe Presents." "
Good work! Looks like you're not content with pure didacticism, but give your students the opportunity to hone their discernment skills.
I'll never forget the JVIP show I watched many years ago, where Jack had his wife Rexella shill for him by asking peurile rhetorical questions:
Rexella: Oh, Jack! You mean there's going to be an ANTI-Christ?
Jack: Oh! Oh, Rexella! Yes! It's going to be so horrible....
Some ballroom dancing is fine but there is plenty of ballroom dancing that is sexually suggestive. As Christians, we have to be discerning about what activities we partake in. I don't know why anyone would have a problem with a simple waltz but I can definitely see where there would be a problem with Christians engaging in the sexually suggestive Latin dances.
Very clearly scripture tells Christians not to engage in perverse or suggestive activities, I think a solid case can be made against these Latin dances. But all dancing, there isn't a good case to be made against it, much like prohibitions against alcohol (we'll pretend that Jesus didn't drink wine) and bans on card playing.
I knew someone back in the day who claimed that rock music was evil because it has a back beat. She attempted to prove scripturally that such music was sinful. Her argument was asinine, not to be found in scripture at all. I think she was right, quite a lot of rock music is evil based on lyrics alone. But all rock music, scripture doesn't address this. Ultimately, if we're going to determine whether an activity is a sin we need to be able to prove it scripturally and the argument needs to be solid. Van Impe has never been solid in anything so it shouldn't surprise anyone that he's loco on ballroom dancing.
Want some post-Halloween shocks? Google "Famous Rapture Watchers." (Not approved by Van Impe.) Want more shocks? Google "Powered by Christ Ministries" and check out MacPherson's other articles. (Not approved by Van Impe.) If you really wanna go whole-hog, get "The Rapture Plot" (Armageddon Books - about 14 bucks for 300 pages) - the biggest collection of documentation on the newly found (and long hidden) origin of the 177-year-old pretrib rapture view. (This "Plot" book is most assuredly NOT approved by Van Impe!) Louise
According to Harold Camping, the only legitimate form of dancing is ballroom dancing. All others are out of bounds.
Bill thanks for the info. I never knew that these fundamentalist were pro war! Especially since I believe that Christ taught against war. He did also say that His kingdom was not of this world.
Did you notice a few weeks ago when the pres of Iran was in the USA he said that he was for peace and that Iran did not want war with the USA.
President Bush wouldn't give him the time of day. This guy came half way around the world! Something is wrong here, why didn't our president meet with this guy that he wants to go to war with? It's sad that old George doesn't mind killing more of our soldiers.
Bill,
I agree whats really messed up about ballroom danceing? I understand most churcht donnt like it because of how close a girl and guy get when they dance!!! but I personaly think that if your not thinking about that person in a bad way (like lust or sexualy) then its perfictly fine I have ballroom danced with many of my friends for fun but like I said it depends on who you ask.
