Are All Sins the Same?
"All sin is sin - one sin is not greater than another and should not be condemned any more harshly than any other sin."
This is a popular concept in Evangelicalism today which I suppose we owe to the Baptistfication of theology, but I don't think it is wholly accurate. Certainly in both the OT and NT certain sins were singled out for more severe punishment or condemnation. While there was a whole lot of stonin' going on in the OT, the law did not require every sin to result in stoning. There were levels of punishment. In the NT, we have teaching about various sins and living righteously, but Christ indicates that some sins are worse than others and will even have graver eschatological consequences (Matthew 11:20-24).
Likewise, Paul denounces a whole host of sins, but not all sin was meant with expulsion from the assembly. Paul has a good amount to say about sexual sin, even taking place within the church, but a certain "kind" of sin Paul calls for expulsion (I Cor. 5:1). So, in the here and now, there is clearly a distinction of sin and punishment, and we even have hints of levels of suffering and reward in the hereafter (Matt. 11:20-24; I Cor. 3:10-13).Where all sin is alike is that it all leads to death. Theoretically if a guy's only sin in life is stealing a Snicker's bar and he doesn't have the forgiveness of Christ, then his sin condemns him just as sin condemns the hardened murderer who is also without Christ. But it's absurd to think that stealing a Snicker's bar is morally equal to child rape or armed robbery, even though all are sinful activities. I think I understand what people mean when they say all sin is equal in that all sin leads to death and all sinners need Jesus (i.e. all of us). But I'm not seeing anywhere in Scripture where "all sin is the same."
The statement above I am responding to took place in a Christian discussion forum I am a part of. The subject was homosexuality and the poster was trying to make a statement that while she accepted that homosexuality was sinful, it really isn't any different from any other sin. While I don't agree with that for reasons stated above, I'm not so sure homosexuality is all that much more terrible than many other forms of sexual sin. Most Christians who take a high view of Scripture can make many Biblical and practical cases against homosexuality. I find the gay-friendly theologies out there quite unconvincing, not because of inherent bigotry, but because they just don't convince.
But while conservative Christians speak out against sexual sin of all kind, none come under such hysteria as the homosexual issue. And the gay-lib theologians are correct in pointing out that the condemnations of straight sexual sins far outnumber those specifically directed at homosexuals. In fact, we don't exactly have mounds of direct references to homosexuality in the OT or NT-- but we do, however, have more than enough to build a case against the behavior, and I don't think it can just be limited to cultural considerations. But if we want to take the gay marriage issue, which for the record I do not support--can we honestly say with a straight face that gays are destroying the institution of marriage by their political activities aimed at obtaining basically secular "marriage" recognition? It seems to me that straight people did a fine job on their own of denigrating marriage, including more than a few married Christian couples.

Good-morning Bill,
I couldn't agree more with you about the homosexual issue being a "worse" sin than others. I know way too many people that view homosexuality right up there with the sin against the Holy Spirit. How wrong they are. The church today has a problem with divorce, yet it does not look at the dissolution of the marriage contract in the same manner they do homosexuality. While I may be wrong on this, I view divorce as being completely incompatible with Christianity. I know of many Christians, or shall I say, those who claim to be Christians that have gotten a divorce and believe it to be God's will for their lives. One woman we know met her 2nd husband at work and started to have an affair with him and believed that it was the will of God for her to divorce her first husband and marry this man. And she still claimed to be a Christian. I have problems with that.
Divorce is a major problem in the church today amongst those who claim a "relationship" with Jesus Christ. How can that be? We condemn the gay man or woman to hell for sexual sin yet wink and nod over our own. One isn't more terrible than the other. Sin is sin.
As far as marriage for homosexuals, let them get married. While I strongly disagree with the entire concept of it, this is America. I see nothing in the laws that should prevent them from doing so. The institution of marriage is crumbling not because of the homosexual, but because of Christians(?) dreadful similarities to pagans when it comes to divorce. We are supposed to be different and let our light shine before men, but aren't doing it. And we then have the gall to tell unbelieving homosexuals how to live.
I wonder if the "sinners prayer" which you mentioned in an earlier post makes conversion more of a "witches formula" than true faith. Have those who are supposively getting saved been crushed by the weight of their sin, know in real life that they put Jesus on the cross and deserve death, and then humbly submit to the salvation He offers, with obedience as a qualifier. I think 1 John presents that to us. Will the church listen?

Wow. Hello everyone. God bless. Well. No all sin is not the same. In the laws of Moses if a man steals during the night he is to be killed. ( no pun intended). But if a man is caught stealing during the day he is punished lightly. And like wise there were different tresspass offerings for different tresspasses. One offence may constitute the sacrificing of a sheep or a ram or the likes there of. And another may mean the sacrifice of a fowl. All of these are in the laws printed in leviticus namely Lev. 14-20. And I would like to just add a tid bit of information on the topic of devorce as it is explained in the old and the new Testament. Duet. 24:1+ says it is permissable to write a bill of divorse if you find something unclean about your wife. O.k. At the same time Duet. 22:13 says if a man marries a woman but hates her and says she was not a maid and speeks ill of her and tries to divorse... that for him speaking ill of her he will pay a tribute of 100 silver shekles and she is his "forever"(physically) he can not leave her. Now! If Jesus then says it is only lawful for a man to divorse his wife if there has been sexual misconduct how is that any different. Hes plainly saying that 1. all other excuses are not good enouph complying with my latter example Duet 22:13 and 2. that she was unclean comlying with my first ex. Duet.24:1. Furhter more I dont understand why people try and make Jesus look like a joke when he explicitly says time and time again obey the laws and the commandments. The number one of those commandments being love God with all your heart Mathews 22:36. This was the major problem in the bible narritive anyway. That you have a man claiming to be from heaven who is telling you that your biggest obligation on this planet is to love God. And everybody is more conserned with the technical aspect of all the rest of the laws exept the most important one. Mathews 19:16 says a rich man came to jesus and said master what should I do to have eternal life. And what does Jesus of the bible say. Obey the commandments. And we now know that the number one commandment is to love God. Jesus in the bible did that and confessed it before the masses. Ex John 14:31.

Haven' got a clue what was just said . . .

Hey, Pastor Bill. My name is Pastor Cody- and I'm a 26 year old minister! What a coincidence (I guess). I wanted to write you an e-mail, but you didn't have an e-mail link or anything. Anyway, I love all your posts (actually just discovered your blog today). I wanted to know if you would be interested in communicating back and forth, one 26 year old minister to another. If you are interested, my blog is www.anewkindofminister.blogspot.com, and my e-mail address is pccsalt@hotmail.com. Love to hear from you, because I am also interested in learning about the Anabaptist stream (always been intrigued, never actually met someone from it). Well, now that I've written a novel, I'll see you later!

William Warnbell, i love you.
And i'm very glad for that last paragraph.
Don't you find that "the church" spends so much time on sins of the fles, they forget the more serious ones: "factions, anger strife, disunity etc. Titus 3:9 -10 are extremely strong admonitions to the church itself. We pay little attention to these except to castigate one another about being divisive: eg. you dont,t think and act like we do. We have become self righteous and can't see it..."the god of this world is blinding our eyes..." and exchanged The radical grace of Jesus Christ for the letter of the law. We point the finger and praise Jesus at the same time. It must grieve him
Thank you for your blog ---- don,t always agree but always am challenged...
Was Jesus being literal when he said "Get behind me Satan!?"
I think if all the gluttonous (I'm including food, money, prestige, et al) televangelists would change their ways (which they won't), their words against sexual sins might have more of a chance of sticking......well, I can dream, can't I?
